The legendary musical Hair will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a one-time special event at La MaMa E.T.C. on January 21 at 2pm. The event will also celebrate creator James Rado's 85th birthday.

The celebration will include live performances by members of Hair's Broadway casts, including Shaelah Adkisson, Ellen Foley, Natalie Mosco, Allan Nicholls, Rev. Marjrie Lipari, Dale Soules, André De Shields, Ula Hedwig, and Keith Carradine. Songs to be performed include "Aquarius," "Donna," "Let the Sun Shine In," and more.

Hair creators James Rado and Galt MacDermot (collaborator Gerome Ragni died in 1991) will be on hand to share their personal stories with the audience, and the performance will feature a prerecorded video from Hair producer Michael Butler and original cast member Walter Michael Harris. In addition, the very first demo recording of the title song "Hair," sung by Rado and Ragni with MacDermot on piano will be played.

Hair's 50th anniversary event is presented as part of La MaMa's "Coffeehouse Chronicles" series, which explores the history and development of off-off-Broadway — part history lesson and part portrait of downtown artists and their work.
