Public Theater Kicks Off 2016 Under the Radar Festival

The annual event takes place through January 15.

The Public Theater celebrated the opening of the 2016 Under the Radar Festival, running from January 4-15. The 13th annual festival will comprise works by theater companies from across the United States and countries such as Belarus, Indonesia, and Lebanon. Mark Russell serves as festival director.

Highlights include the Obie-winning 600 Highwaymen's The Fever, Manual Cinema's Lula del Ray, and Belarus Free Theatre's Time of Women, as well as works by The Bengsons, Marga Gomez, Tania El Khoury, Eko Nugroho, Philippe Quesne, and Rimini Protokoll.

The lineup also includes Waterwell's Blueprint Specials, a series of lost World War II-era musicals composed principally by Broadway legend Frank Loesser, which will take place at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. Tony nominees Laura Osnes and Will Swenson will star. Tom Ridgely directs.

Over the last 13 years, the Public’s Under the Radar Festival has presented over 210 companies from 41 countries. It has grown into a landmark of the New York City theater season and is a vital part of the Public's mission, providing a high-visibility platform to support artists from diverse backgrounds who are redefining the act of making theater.
