Lynn Nottage's Sweat, Starring Miriam Shor and More, Opens at the Public

Kate Whoriskey directs the new drama.

The Public Theater celebrated its New York premiere of Sweat by Lynn Nottage on November 3. Directed by Kate Whoriskey, Sweat will play through December 4.

The complete cast features Carlo Albán (Oscar), James Colby (Stan), Khris Davis (Chris), Johanna Day (Tracey), John Earl Jelks (Brucie), Will Pullen (Jason), Miriam Shor (Jessie), Lance Coadie Williams (Evan), and Michelle Wilson (Cynthia).

Sweat tells the story of a group of friends who have spent their lives sharing drinks, secrets, and laughs while working together on the line of a factory floor. But when layoffs and picket lines begin to chip away at their trust, the friends find themselves pitted against one another in the hard fight to stay afloat.

The play is the result of extensive interviews conducted by Nottage and Whoriskey, who spent two years visiting and interviewing residents of Reading, Pennsylvania, which was named America's poorest city in 2011. Sweat was a co-commission of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater.
