The Fantasticks to Close Off-Broadway After 57 Years

The long-running musical will end its legendary tenure in New York City.

Producers of off-Broadway's long-running musical The Fantasticks, now in its 57th year, have announced that the production will close on June 4. At the time of its closing, the production will have played a total of 21,552 performances in New York City. Following the show's closing, The Crusade of Connor Stephens will take up residency at the Jerry Orbach Theatre, beginning performances June 17.

Featuring music by Harvey Schmidt and book, lyrics, and direction by Tom Jones, The Fantasticks follows a boy and girl who fall in love and then quickly grow apart. The score includes hit songs such as "Try to Remember," "Soon It's Gonna Rain," and "They Were You."

The musical's original run at the Sullivan Street Playhouse in Greenwich Village logged a record-breaking 17,162 performances, closing in 2002. In 2006, the revival opened at The Theater Center, directed by Tom Jones (author and lyricist).

The off-Broadway cast currently features Bradley Dean as El Gallo (the Narrator), Emily Behny as Luisa (the Girl), Nathan Goodrich as Matt (the Boy), Dan Sharkey as Hucklebee (the Boy’s Father), Dale Hensley as Bellomy (the Girl's Father), MacIntyre Dixon as Henry (the Old Actor), Michael Nostrand as Mortimer (the Man Who Dies), and Aaron Wright as the Mute. The production also features Scott Willis, John Thomas Waite, and Samantha Bruce.

Robert Felstein serves as musical director and pianist with Marjorie Fitts on harp.
