WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
The Obie Award-winning Peculiar Works Project and Fraunces Tavern Museum announce their unique collaboration for the world premiere of Androboros: Villain of the State, America's first published play, written by Robert Hunter and adapted by S.M. Dale. Ralph Lewis directs a multitalented cast led by British actor and comedian Matt Roper as Androboros and featuring Trav S.D. (author of No Applause — Just Throw Money: The Book That Made Vaudeville Famous) in this rare work. Androboros reveals many surprising comparisons with the current political scene using an edgy humor very much in tune with today's nonstop partisan madness. Based on a true story (the vestment scandal of 1714), Hunter's satire is full of wordplay, slapstick, and scatological humor. The play's mix of Elizabethan language and commedia dell'arte is further enhanced by Peculiar Works's site-specific adaptation, which adds to the merriment with original live music and dance.
