WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
It's hard to capture the wind, the freedom of the highway, and the psychedelic insanity of road-tripping in the 1970s. Ellen Kaye, whose parents owned the iconic New York City restaurant the Russian Tea Room, ran away from home in 1974. She was 14 and hitchhiked 7,500 miles across America. Upon her return to N.Y.C., though not an addict, she was exiled to Phoenix House, a drug rehabilitation program. In this show, she tackles race relations, gender inequality, and class struggles with humor, wit, and music. Ellen speaks directly to current times through the turmoil and excitement of decades past.
