Monsoon Wedding Makes Landfall at Berkeley Rep

Monsoon Wedding begins performances tonight at Berkeley Repertory Theatre.

Sabrina Dhawan (book), Vishal Bhardwaj (music), and Susan Birkenhead's (lyrics) Monsoon Wedding is described as "the perfect storm that starts brewing when family members from around the world descend on Delhi for a nonstop four-day celebration of an arranged marriage between a modern upper-middle-class Indian family’s only daughter and an Indian-American guy she’s never met. But the bride is having an affair, her father’s financial troubles deepen, and dark family secrets surface. The forecast calls for drama, love, hope, laughs, and a whole lot of rain."

The cast features Monsoon Latané Bissell (Shashi), Meetu Chilana (Ma, Maid, Auntie), Emielyn D. Das (Aliya), Sharvari Deshpande (Ria), Palomi Ghosh (Vijaya), Rohan Gupta (Varun), Jaaved Jaaferi (Lalit), Mahira Kakkar (Pimmi), Krystal Kiran (Saroj Rai), Michael Maliakel (Hemant), Anisha Nagarajan (Alice), Andrew Prashad (Mohan Rai, Sidekick), Alok Tewari (Tej), Levin Valayil (Sidekick), Kuhoo Verma (Aditi), and Sorab Wadia (Cl Chawla, Tameesuddin). Dani Jazzar and Namita Kapoor round out the ensemble.

The creative team includes Mikiko Suzuki MacAdams (scenic design), Arjun Bhasin (costume design), Donald Holder (lighting design), Scott Lehrer (sound design), and Peter Nigrini (projection design). The music supervision is by Carmel Dean with music direction from Greg Kenna and choreography by Lorin Latarro. Mira Nair directs.
