San Francisco Opera’s Show Boat, Starring Bill Irwin and Harriet Harris, to Hit Cinemas

International distributor Rising Alternative will release a filmed version of the 2014 production.

International distributor Rising Alternative has announced that San Francisco Opera‘s June 2014 production of Show Boat will be screened in movie theaters across the country this summer. The recent production was helmed by theater and opera director Francesca Zambello.

Show Boat will open in major cities across the United States, beginning with Los Angeles on May 25, and in New York City on June 12. Other cities include Boston, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Miami, Atlanta, St. Louis, Philadelphia, San Jose, and Honolulu.

The musical classic features music by Jerome Kern and book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. A tale of life on the Mississippi from the 1880s to the 1920s, it is both a poignant love story and a powerful reminder of the bitter legacy of racism.

Show Boat stars Bill Irwin, Heidi Stober, Michael Todd Simpson, Patricia Racette, Angela Renée Simpson, Harriet Harris, Morris Robinson, Kirsten Wyatt, and John Bolton, with Sharon McNight, James Asher, Kevin Blackton, Patrick Cummings, Matthew Piatt, Carmen Steele, Tracy Camp, Kathleen Bayler, Sally Mouzon, Mary Finch, Samantha McElhaney, Erin Neff, Simone Paulwell, Rachelle Perry, Christopher Jackson, Anthony McGlaun, and Phillip Pickens.

Rising Alternative provides cinemas with programs from the world’s most prestigious performing arts institutions. During the past two years, Rising Alternative have released 22 new titles per year, live via satellite as well as on DCP and other digital cinema formats, and their exhibition partner network includes more than 2,700 screens in 44 countries.
