Treasure Island Sets Sail at Berkeley Rep

Performances of Treasure Island start this evening at Berkeley Repertory Theatre.
Based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s beloved novel, the show takes place on the Hispaniola, a ship setting sail from 18th-century England. Aboard is a cabin boy named Jim Hawkins, who is thrown into the midst of a deadly quest for fabled buried treasure when the ship is overtaken by the infamous Long John Silver. On the voyage, surrounded by pirates, Jim is confronted with a murderous plot and tossed on the ambiguous tides of morality.
Adapted and directed by Mary Zimmerman, the show features Steven Epp as Long John Silver, John Babbo as Jim Hawkins, Matt DeCaro as Squire Trelawny, Christopher Donahue as Billy Bones, Kasey Foster as Mrs. Hawkins/Musician, Alex Moggridge as Dr. Livesey, Steve Pickering as Black Dog, Philip R. Smith as Captain Smollett, Demetrios Troy as Israel Hands, Greg Hirte and L.J. Slavin as Musician, and Matthew C. Yee, Travis Delgado, and Anthony Irons compose the ensemble.
"The moment I started reading Treasure Island, I was completely smitten and saw it on the stage — in a room, in a theatre," said Zimmerman. "I’m so excited to share this adventure, which is the story that gave rise to all pirate lore as we know it, with the Berkeley Rep audience."
The creative team includes Todd Rosenthal (set design), Ana Kuzmanic (costume design), TJ Gerckens (lighting design), Andre Pluess (original music and sound design), and Megan McClintock (stage manager).
Performances will run through June 5.
