Grammy-winning R&B singer Michelle Williams, will star in the title role of The Muny‘s 2016 production of Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida, running from August 8-14 at the St. Louis theater. The production will be directed by Matt Lenz, with choreography by John Rua and music direction by Andrew Graham. Aida is sponsored by Edward Jones.

"We’re thrilled Michelle will star as our Aida," said Muny artistic director and executive producer Mike Isaacson. "It is one of the most iconic roles in contemporary musical theater, and I can’t wait to see her create her particular brand of musical magic on the Muny stage."

Williams joined the record-setting R&B/pop female group Destiny’s Child in 1999, which released a string of hit singles such as "Say My Name," "Independent Women Part 1," "Survivor," and "Bootylicious." In 2002, she released her debut solo album, Heart to Yours, followed by Do You Know (2004), Unexpected (2008), and Journey to Freedom (2014). Williams made her theatrical stage debut in 2003 in the original Broadway production of Aida, and in 2010, returned to Broadway as Roxie Hart in Chicago.

Based on the Verdi opera of the same title, Aida features music by Elton John, lyrics by Tim Rice, and a book by Linda Woolverton, Robert Falls, and David Henry Hwang. The original Broadway production won four 2000 Tony Awards for Best Score, Best Scenic Design (Bob Crowley), Best Lighting Design (Natasha Katz), and Best Actress (Heather Headley, who originated the title role).
