Arena Stage Finds its Gods for Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses

D.C.-based company to present first in-the-round production of award-winning play.

Arena Stage will present the Lookingglass Theatre Company’s production of Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses, running February 8-March 17 on the Fichandler Stage. Zimmerman will direct the show, which will be presented in the round for the first time.

Metamorphoses, which first debuted at Lookingglass in 1998, is based on the myths of Ovid. The show later played on Broadway in 2002-2003, earning Zimmerman the Tony Award for Best Direction, and has been seen in numerous regional productions.

The cast will feature Geoff Packard (Cyex), Derek Hasenstab (Hermes) Raymond Fox (Midas), Doug Hara (Phaeton), Chris Kipiniak (Cinyras), Louise Lamson (Alcyon), Lisa Tejero (Therapist), Ashleigh Lathrop (Myrrha), Lauren Orkus (Eurydice), and Tempe Thomas (Aphrodite).

The creative team will include Dan Ostling (sets), Mara Blumenfeld (costumes), T.J.Gerckens (lighting), Andre Pluess (sound), and Willy Schwarz (music).

Zimmerman’s many other stage works include The White Snake, The Arabian Nights, Argonautika, and The Notebooks of Leonardo DaVinci. She also received the Helen Hayes Award for her production of Candide.
