Evita starts its run at Olney Theatre Center tonight.

The show tells the story of Argentina’s passionate political figure Eva Perón. Even more controversial in life than in death, Evita is alternately heralded as a champion of the poor and a baldly ambitious gold digger. Alongside her ardent political life was a love triangle that elicited even more fervor. With the anthem "Don’t Cry for Me Argentina," the show depicts both a love for the country’s descamisados (her "shirtless" followers) and relentless ambition.

This production of the iconic musical, which features music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, is helmed by Will Davis. Christopher Youstra provides musical direction, and Christopher D’Amboise choreographs. Starring in the production is Rachel Zampelli as Evita, and alongside her in the cast is Nick Duckart as Perón, Robert Ariza as Che, Jamie Eacker as Mistress, Jonathan Atkinson as Magaldi.

"I’m a queer feminist making this piece from a place of deep love for the show, and making space to question it, to complexify it," says Davis.

The creative team includes Arnulfo Maldonado (set design), Ivania Stack (costume design), Colin K. Bills (lighting design), Lane Elms (sound design), Josiane M. Lemieux (stage manager).

Performances will run through July 24.
