The TDPS New Play Workshop is an opportunity for student playwrights at UMD to develop a short play in a supportive environment. Each selected playwright will be assigned a mentor—a professional dramatist living and working in the Baltimore-DC corridor. Mentors will serve as guides through the process of rehearsing with a director and actors, filtering and implementing feedback, and revising.
SigWorks: Monday Night New Play Readings at Ali's Bar is an initiative that highlights and supports the work of DMV (Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia) playwrights. This (free!) reading series is an opportunity for playwrights, actors, directors, designers, and patrons to explore new plays in a fun and informal environment. On the day of a play's reading, the play first receives a mini-developmental workshop with professional actors. The reading follows and is in turn followed by a dialogue with the audience and the artists. Here's the 2016-17 lineup:
Alabaster by Audrey Cefaly - October 3
Dogwood Cross by Michael Trottier - November 14
Fortune Cookies for Easy Women Smoking Loose Cigarettes by Dani Stoller - February 6
The Reapers on Woodbrook Avenue by Mardee Bennett - April 27
Swimming With Whales by Bob Bartlett - June 5
An innocent boy, son to a family of goat herders, is found to be heir to the kingdom. Riches and luxury are laid at his feet, but at what cost to others?
This world premiere musical adaptation of Oscar Wilde's The Young King, by Martin Hennessy with libretto by Tom Rowan, addresses human rights and social justice issues directly relevant to contemporary wealth and income inequality struggles. Performed by Maryland Opera Studio (MOS) artists.
Hennessy is the winner of the inaugural Opera Composition Contest, a joint effort between MOS and the Artist Partner Program to support the cultivation and performance of new work.
