The memoirs of an American master come to the stage tonight.
How I Learned What I Learned begins performances tonight at Huntington Theatre Company.
The solo show focuses on legendary playwright August Wilson at the beginning of his career. He relays stories of his life as a young poet in Pittsburgh’s Hill District and his first few jobs, as well as delving into a stint in jail and talking about lifelong friends. Throughout all he touches on his encounters with both racism and love. The journey of self-discovery shows a man who through adversity became one of the most influential writers of our time and brought to the forefront what it means to be a black artist in America.
Based on the writings of August Wilson, the show is directed and co-conceived by Todd Kreidler and stars Eugene Lee as August Wilson.
The creative team includes David Gallo (set and projection design), Constanza Romero (costume design), Thom Weaver (lighting design), Dan Moses Schreier (sound design), and Jeremiah Mullane (stage manager).
Performances will run through April 3.
