Disney Theatrical Productions will revive its first-ever stage musical.
During an interview with ABC News, Disney Theatrical Productions president Thomas Schumacher teased plans for a revival of Disney's first-ever Broadway musical, Beauty and the Beast. The musical opened on April 18, 1994, at the Palace Theatre and ran for 13 years, closing at the Lunt-Fontanne on July 29, 2007.
In the interview, Schumacher explained there were not yet dates or a theater set for the revival production. "But I'm deep in it," he said. "So yeah, it's happening."
Beauty and the Beast features music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, and a book by Linda Woolverton. The original Broadway production was directed by Robert Jess Roth, with choreography by Matt West, and starred Susan Egan as Belle, Terrence Mann as Beast, Gary Beach as Lumiere, Tom Bosley as Maurice, Beth Fowler as Mrs. Potts, Heath Lamberts as Cogsworth, Burke Moses as Gaston, and Kenny Raskin as Lefou.
Disney Theatrical Productions' currently running Broadway musicals include Frozen, The Lion King, and Aladdin.
