Nominations for the 57th annual Drama Desk Awards were announced this morning by past winners Brian d’Arcy James and Donna Murphy at Feinstein’s at the Loews Regency, and streamed live on the Internet.
The Broadway revival of Follies and the Off-Broadway musical Death Takes a Holiday lead the field, with the former receiving ten nominations, and the latter now at eleven nominations following the reinstatement of the Outstanding Orchestrations category. (See this news story.)
Among the numerous nominees for this year’s awards are David Cromer, Hugh Dancy, Raúl Esparza, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Bill Irwin, Judy Kaye, Angela Lansbury, Judith Light, Sanaa Lathan, Linda Lavin, Norm Lewis, Marin Mazzie, Audra McDonald, Ricky Martin, Alan Menken, Mike Nichols, Denis O’Hare, Kelli O’Hara, Patrick Page, Elaine Paige, Bernadette Peters, Duncan Sheik, Kevin Spacey, Suzanne Vega, and Frank Wildhorn.
In addition to the competitive awards, special awards are being given to the ensemble of Sweet and Sad — Jon DeVries, Shuler Hensley, Maryann Plunkett, Laila Robins, Jay O. Sanders, and J. Smith-Cameron; actress Mary Testa; actor Nick Westrate; The New Victory Theatre, and playwright Stephen Karam, who is the recipient of the newly created Sam Norkin Off Broadway Award.
As per Drama Desk rules, shows that opened Off-Broadway in previous seasons and have transferred to Broadway this season — including Clybourne Park, Other Desert Cities, Peter and the Starcatcher, and Venus in Fur — are only eligible for their new elements. In addition, The Drama Desk Board has decided that music and lyrics that come from another medium and are appearing for the first time on Broadway are eligible, which applies to the new musical Once, which has received nominations for its score.
