Tolan appeared on Broadway in five shows, including Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter, Romanoff and Juliet, and A Majority of One. In 1963, he co-founded the American Place Theatre with Wynn Handman.
His many film and television credits included The Doctors and the Nurses, The Greatest Story Ever Told, The Senator, The Mary Tyler Moore, and All That Jazz.
He is survived by his companion, Donna Peck, his brother, Gerald Tuchow, and his children Alexandra, Jenny, and Emilie.
