Eve Ensler, the author and original star of the long-running Off-Broadway play The Vagina Monologues, will return to the show for its final three weeks of performances.
The 1999 recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship in Playwriting, Ensler has written a number of other works for the stage, including Necessary Targets (which opened Off-Broadway last season), The Depot, Floating Rhoda and the Glue Man, Extraordinary Measures, Ladies, and Convictions.
The Vagina Monologues won a 1997 OBIE award and was nominated for Drama Desk and Helen Hayes awards in the United States, while the West End staging of the show received an Olivier Award nomination for Best Entertainment. The Off-Broadway production currently stars Hazelle Goodman, Margot Kidder, and Marin Mazzie, who will remain in the cast through December 22. Three additional actresses yet to be announced will take over for the period December 24 through January 5, and Ensler — who last appeared in the production in January 2000 — will return on January 7.
The Vagina Monologues plays at the Westside Theatre (407 West 43rd Street). Tickets may be purchased by calling Telecharge at 212-239-6200. For additional information, visit the website vaginamonologues.com.
