The ”Sailor Moon”-inspired musical runs at the Playstation Theater.
The new musical Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon The Super Live makes its New York debut this weekend at the Playstation Theatre in Times Square. Today, the company of this 2.5D musical met the press for a special preview, ahead of performances on March 29 and 30.
Inspired by the popular manga, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon The Super Live marks the first time a 2.5D musical will be on an American stage. 2.5D musicals are based on popular contemporary Japanese cultural items, including manga comics, anime, and video games. Manga and animation are in 2D, and live theatre is in 3D. Therefore, they call performances based on manga and animations 2.5D.
Directed and choreographed by Takahiro, with a book by Akiko Kodama and music by Hyadain, the musical features an all-female cast, made up of Tomomi Kasai, Momoko Kaechi, Yui Hasegawa, Kanna Matsuzaki, Yu Nakanishi, Makoto Aikawa, Reo Sanada, Atsumi Matsubayashi, Izumi Niihashi, Ayumi Higashikawa, Moeko Koizumi, Hinako Aikawa, and Riona Tatemichi.
Created by Naoko Takeuchi, Sailor Moon began as a manga in 1991 in Japan. It was subsequently adapted as an anime program and a live-action television program. In Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon The Super Live, the characters come to life onstage, produced in part to commemorate the franchise's 25th anniversary.
