New York City
The annual Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS event is now in its 27th edition.
Dates have been announced for the 27th annual Gypsy of the Year competition. The show will offer two performances, December 7 at 4:30pm and December 8 at 2pm, at the New Amsterdam Theatre, home of Broadway's Aladdin. The event is produced by and benefits Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
Gypsy of the Year is an annual tradition honoring the work of the theater's ensemble singers and dancers, commonly referred to as "gypsies." Throughout the two days of performances, 200 New York City gypsies and their special guests will perform original skits, songs, and dances. Awards will be presented to the top fundraisers, as well as to the artist with the best presentation.
The fundraising campaign begins today as casts all over Broadway and across the country start collecting in the signature red Broadway Cares buckets. Since 1989, the 26 editions of Gypsy of the Year have raised $62.4 million to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Last year, 64 participating Broadway, off-Broadway, and national touring companies raised a record-breaking $5.2 million.
