Jared Grimes hosted the annual celebration of dance and choreography on May 22.
Winners of the 2023 Chita Rivera Awards were announced on Monday, May 22 in a ceremony at the NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts. Funny Girl‘s Jared Grimes served as host for the evening, which celebrates excellence in dance and choreography.
A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical walked away with the most awards — Steven Hoggett winning for Outstanding Choreography in a Broadway Show, and Jess LeProtto and Robyn Hurder both winning for Outstanding Dancer in a Broadway Show (alongside Mattie Love for Bob Fosse’s Dancin’). Bob Fosse’s Dancin’ and New York, New York won the award for Outstanding Ensemble in a Broadway Show, while Only Gold earned special recognitions for achievement in off-Broadway musical theater: Gaby Diaz and Ryan Steele were honored as Outstanding Dancers in an Off-Broadway Show, and Andy Blankenbuehler was given the award for Outstanding Choreography in an Off-Broadway Show. Jamal Sims also earned the award for Choreography in Film for his work on the film adaptation of Jason Robert Brown’s 13: The Musical.
Additionally at this year’s ceremony, John Kander received the Lifetime Achievement Award; BroadwayHD, founded by Bonnie Comley and Stewart F. Lane, received the Ambassadors For The Arts Award; and Jeffrey L. Page received the Douglas and Ethel Watt Critics’ Choice Award.
