First, go to class. Really. It may be tempting to sleep in through your 9:30 but if you do the math and realize how much you’re paying for each lecture you’re sleeping through, I guarantee you’ll be more inclined to put on some real clothes and get there. Also, you might learn something.
It sounds obvious, but time management is super important. Don’t wait until the night before your 12-page paper is due and then pull an all-nighter at the library. Or if you do, don’t complain about it to your friends who did it two weeks ago. Just remember this before you spend your weekend watching Toddlers and Tiaras. Learn to organize your time so you can do your paper and then go to that concert.
But most importantly: have fun. College is the “best time of your life” so you should take advantage of everything your school has to offer. Go on adventures, meet new people, and do some of your own learning outside the classroom. Schoolwork is important, but no one will care about what you got on that Natural Science final in the real world.
If you’re planning for a career in theater, my advice is to see everything! Explore whatever theater options are in your area — from Broadway style musicals to experimental devised work that your friends are doing in some basement. It’s all part of your education and allows you to look at the field with an educated perspective.
If you want to write, then read. Read everything. Read the kinds of writing you want to do (I try to read theater reviews from a wide variety of sources, for example) but being well rounded is great. Study philosophy, art, history. It will all help you become a better writer because it gives you different perspectives through which to see the world.
