Liberty: A Monumental New Musical will return to the off-Broadway stage this summer at 42West. The production originally ran at Theatre 80 in 2014, starring Abigail Shapiro (How the Grinch Stole Christmas), who reprises her leading role. Performances will begin June 6 in advance of a July 4 opening.

Described as a "fast-paced pop-infused 80-minute musical," the show details the story of Lady Liberty’s arrival in America. Shapiro stars as Liberty, a young French immigrant who arrives in New York Harbor in 1884 while political forces align to deport her. Battling to gain acceptance, she eventually becomes a lasting symbol of the young country.

Adapted from original material by Robert Bruce McIntosh and brother-and-sister team Dana Leslie Goldstein and Jon Goldstein, Liberty is written by Dana Leslie and Jon Goldstein, directed by Evan Pappas, and produced by Theresa Wozunk, Michelle Shapiro, and Tim Harper.

The creative team and additional casting is yet to be announced.
