Daniel Pearle’s dramedy makes its Chicago premiere at Greenhouse Theater Center.
About Face Theatre's A Kid Like Jake begins performances tonight at the Greenhouse Theater Center. The play centers on two parents, Alexandra and Greg, and their son, Jake, who expresses a passion for dressing up, as well as for Cinderella, while competing for enrollment at competitive Manhattan kindergarten programs. The work explores current assumptions of parenting and gender as well as their relationship to education and acceptance.
The play is directed by Keira Fromm and written by Daniel Pearle. It features Cindy Gold (Loving Repeating), Katherine Keberlein (Smokefall), Michael Aaron Lindner (Music Man), and Jessica Dean Turner (Season on the Line, TV's Crisis). The creative team includes Dan Stratton (set design), Mieka van der Ploeg (costume design), Christine Binder (lighting design), Christopher Kriz (sound design), and Emily Guthrie (props design).
"I'm thrilled to be giving this important play its Chicago premiere, with modern parenthood becoming more and more complex and the definition of family ever broadening," says About Face Artistic Director Andrew Volkoff. "Daniel Pearle's intelligent, perceptive script wades into the highly charged waters of gender identity, parenting and our need to 'fit in.' It's a thought-provoking and timely story that will speak to every one of us."
Performances will run through March 15.
