A series of special events will take place during Jazz Appreciation Month.
Broadway's After Midnight is set to celebrate jazz legend Duke Ellington's April 29 birthday and Jazz Appreciation Month with a week of special activities from April 22-26. The musical, which is currently playing at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, is inspired by Ellington and his years performing at the legendary Cotton Club. Vanessa Williams is currently headlining.
After Midnight's week will include special speakeasy-style cocktails at Andaz Hotel Fifth Avenue, a talk-back with the show's cast and company following the April 24 performance, an online listening party on Twitter with special giveaways on April 25, and a performance of "Diga Diga Doo" at the Tribeca Film Family Festival Street Fair. Additionally, on April 23 After Midnight will host a group of young jazz artists from Jazz at Lincoln Center for the evening performance.
Conceived by Jack Viertel, After Midnight features direction and choreography by Warren Carlyle, musical direction by Wynton Marsalis, and musical supervision by Daryl Waters.
The design team for After Midnight includes Isabel Toledo (costumes) and Ruben Toledo, Tony Award winners John Lee Beatty (set design) and Howell Binkley (lighting design), and Peter Hylenski (sound).
