According to a Deadline report, Amanda Seyfried has officially closed a deal to join the cast of the Mamma Mia! film sequel, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! Seyfried played Sophie in the 2008 film opposite Meryl Streep. As previously reported, the sequel — a new musical based on the songs of ABBA — will be released by Universal Pictures on July 20, 2018.
With a soundtrack full of ABBA songs not featured in the first film as well as some reprised favorites, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! comes from the producers of the original Mamma Mia! film: Littlestar's Judy Craymer and Playtone's Gary Goetzman. Craymer is also the creator and producer of the hit stage musical. Ol Parker, writer of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, writes and directs. Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus are aboard again to provide music and lyrics and serve as executive producers.
Seyfried has starred in several films including Dear John, Lovelace, and While We’re Young, as well as the film version of Les Misréables. In 2015, she costarred with Thomas Sadoski in the Second Stage production of Neil LaBute's The Way We Get By.
More of the film's original cast, which included Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Julie Walters, and Christine Baranski, is expected to return, with new additions joining them.
