Cherry Lane Theatre has announced this year's playwrights and mentors for the 20th season of its Mentor Project, a program that partners an emerging author with a seasoned professional for a year of script work, rewrites, casting, rehearsals, and a full production at Cherry Lane. The fully staged productions will be presented February 28-April 7, 2018.

This year's mentors include Mentor Project alum, Anne Washburn (Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play). Washburn will mentor Kate Cortesi, whose play A Patron of the Arts will run February 28-March 10, 2018. The play is described as follows: "When a high school drug dealer does a drop off at a new address, he’s unexpectedly reunited with the father of his childhood best friend. The laid-off father is holed up to re-start the painting career of his youth, and this young entrepreneur wants to help. So, they make an unusual arrangement."

Migdalia Cruz (El Grito Del Bronx) will then mentor Sam Chanse, whose play The Opportunities of Extinction will be presented March 28-April 7, 2018. The play is described as follows: "Mel and Arjun have embarked on a last-minute camping trip to take refuge from the brewing storm of their lives. Georgia is studying the impact of climate change on the imperiled Joshua tree. Navigating a world in crisis on multiple fronts, what does it mean to survive in the face of annihilation?"
