The Lifetime television remake of the 1988 film premieres on January 21.
Today, Warner Bros. Records released an EP of five songs performed by Tony Award winner Idina Menzel (Frozen, Wicked) for the original Lifetime movie remake of Beaches, premiering January 21. Menzel stars opposite Nia Long (The Best Man Holiday) as aspiring singer C.C. Bloom, the role made famous by Bette Midler, who sang the songs for the original 1988 film. The new EP includes Menzel's renditions of the songs "Wind Beneath My Wings," "I Can Hear the Music," "I’ll Stand by You," "Last Time," and "The Glory of Love."
Beaches follows the serendipitous meeting of two young girls on the Venice Boardwalk, who, though worlds apart in lifestyle, embark on an unexpected and lifelong friendship. C.C. (Menzel) is an aspiring singer trying to make it in Los Angeles until she is discovered by a director who gives her her first big shot. Hillary (Long) is the daughter of a prominent civil rights lawyer who struggles to find her own destiny. Their friendship — even with its ups and downs — sustains them for decades.
The 1988 film, which starred Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey, was adapted by Mary Agnes Donoghue from the Iris Rainer Dart novel of the same name and directed by the late Garry Marshall. Allison Anders (Ring of Fire) directs the Lifetime remake, which features a script by Bart Barker (Honeymoon with Harry) and Nikole Beckwith (Stockholm, Pennsylvania).
