Beautiful – The Carole King Musical starts its run tonight at the Oriental Theatre.
The Tony- and Grammy-winning show is based on the inspiring true story of Carole King. It documents her beginnings as part of a songwriting team with her husband, Gerry Goffin, and then her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann. In time, however, King would become one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history, providing the voice of a generation.
Directed by Marc Bruni and choreographed by Josh Prince, the show features a book by Doug McGrath and a host of beloved songs by Gerry Goffin, Carole King, Barry Mann, and Cynthia Weil. Starring in the musical are Abby Mueller as Carole King, Liam Tobin as Gerry Goffin, Becky Gulsvig as Cynthia Weil, and Ben Fankhauser as Barry Mann.
"Carole is a woman of remarkable positivity and resilience," says Mueller. "I so admire her conviction in staying true to her own voice, and her dedication to crafting honest material that came from her heart."
The creative team includes Jason Howland (music direction), Derek Mclane (set design), Alejo Vietti (costume design), Peter Kaczorowski (lighting design), Brian Ronan (sound design), Charles G. Lapointe (hair and wig design), and Joe Dulude II (makeup design).
Performances will run through February 21.
