Aerosmith, Cyndi Lauper, and Sara Bareilles are just a few of the pop stars contributing to the Broadway-bound score.
The SpongeBob Musical is getting ready for its pre-Broadway engagement, running from June 7-July 3 at Broadway in Chicago's Oriental Theatre.
Coconceived and directed by Tina Landau, The SpongeBob Musical stars Gavin Lee (Squidward), Ethan Slater (SpongeBob), Lilli Cooper (Sandy Cheeks), and Danny Skinner (Patrick), and boasts a book by Kyle Jarrow (The Wildness), musical supervision by Tony Award winner Tom Kitt (Next to Normal), and choreography by Tony winner Christopher Gattelli (Newsies).
The most anticipated element of the oceanic new musical, however, is the score, which collects tunes from some of today's hottest musicians. The list includes Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Jonathan Coulton, Dirty Projectors, the Flaming Lips, John Legend, Lady Antebellum, Cyndi Lauper, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T's, They Might Be Giants, T.I., Yolanda Adams, Sara Bareilles (Waitress), and Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, with an additional song by David Bowie, and additional lyrics by Coulton.
Before the show hits the Windy City, the production is offering a behind-the-scenes look at this musical conglomeration, featuring interviews with some of the illustrious artists on the bill. Take a look at the first installment below, and keep your eyes peeled for more chapters in the coming weeks.
