There’s a new Roxie in town starting tonight.
Brandy Norwood (aka "Brandy") officially opens her debut Broadway run in Chicago this evening at the Ambassador Theatre. The pop singer guest stars as Roxie Hart for a limited eight-week run, performing opposite Chicago veteran Amra-Faye Wright, who plays Velma Kelly.
Featuring classic tunes by John Kander and Fred Ebb, Chicago tells the story of Roxie Hart, a nightclub dancer who murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media, and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago's slickest criminal lawyer to transform her crime into a barrage of sensational headlines.
The current revival production opened November 14, 1996 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. In addition to Norwood and Wright, the cast stars Raymond Bokhour (Amos Hart), John Dossett (Billy Flynn), and NaTasha Yvette Williams (Matron Mama Morton).
Brandy will continue in the cast of Chicago through June 21.
