Broadway Legend Maurice Hines Searches for the Next Young Tap Star at Arena Stage

Maurice Hines, best known for his Tony-nominated performance in Uptown…It’s Hot!, will visit Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. to teach a free master class at Howard University. He will also hold open dance auditions at the Mead Center for American Theater in search of the next young tap star to appear in Arena Stage’s production of Tappin' Thru Life, set to run at the Kreeger Theater from November 15-December 29.

Southwest D.C. residents and brothers John and Leo Manzari, who made their professional debuts performing with Hines in the 2010 production of Duke Ellington’s Sophisticated Ladies at Arena Stage, will team up with Hines in his search for the young dancer. They themselves were discovered by Hines in 2009 (17 and 15 years old at the time) at a master class at the Duke Ellington School for the Arts.

Maurice Hines is Tappin’ Thru Life will take audiences through the performer/director/choreographer’s 40 years in show business through song and dance. Accompanied by the Diva Orchestra, the production pays tribute to his brother, the legendary Gregory Hines, as well as iconic singers like Frank Sinatra and Lena Horne, who have inspired Hines throughout his career.
