The stage adaptation of George Orwell’s dystopian novel opens tonight at the Hudson Theatre.
Producers Sonia Friedman and Scott Rudin have announced that the stage adaptation of 1984, now running at Broadway's Hudson Theatre, will implement, effective immediately, an age restriction policy: Audience members must now be age 13 years or older in order to enter the theater.
According to press materials, the new policy is being implemented "due to the intensity of the production, which includes several scenes that are graphic in nature and have disturbed younger patrons."
Written and directed by Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan, the play is adapted from George Orwell's classic novel. The work, written in 1949, depicts a dystopian future in which thought is suppressed and a totalitarian regime controls the public.
The cast stars Tony Award nominee Tom Sturridge, Olivia Wilde in her Broadway debut, and Tony Award winner Reed Birney. The ensemble also includes Wayne Duvall, Carl Hendrick Louis, Nick Mills, Michael Potts, and Cara Seymour.
1984 began preview performances on May 18 and opens tonight at the Hudson Theatre. The strictly limited engagement is set to run through October 8.
