Titled ”The Many Saints of Newark”, the film will be directed by Alan Taylor.
Broadway alums Corey Stoll and Billy Magnussen have been cast in the upcoming movie prequel to The Sopranos, according to Variety.
Titled The Many Saints of Newark, the film will be set in the 1960s during the Newark race riots. Alan Taylor will direct the movie, which will be written by Sopranos creator David Chase and producer Lawrence Konner. Nicole Lambert and Marcus Viscidi are executive producers. The announced cast will also feature Alessandro Nivola, Jon Bernthal, and Vera Farmiga.
Stoll is known to Broadway audiences from his roles in 2007's Old Acquaintance and 2010's A View From the Bridge, and most recently appeared on the New York stage in Othello at Shakespeare in the Park during the 2018 season. He also recently starred in the 2018 film adaption of Anton Chekov's The Seagull.
Magnussen was nominated for a 2013 Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play for originating the role of Spike in Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. In 2014, he starred as Rapunzel's Prince in the movie adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods.
