The solo play starts performances tonight at the George Street Playhouse.
George Street Playhouse's presentation of Jonathan Tolins’ Buyer and Cellar begins performances tonight.
Inspired by the coffee-table book My Passion for Design by Barbra Streisand, the play focuses on the fictional journey of Alex More, an underemployed actor appointed as curator of Streisand’s collection of dolls, costumes, clocks, and other paraphernalia in the "shopping mall'' basement of her Malibu Beach compound. During his employment, he becomes not only Streisand’s shopkeeper, but also confidant and drama coach.
Directed by David Saint and written by Jonathan Tolins, the show features John Tartaglia (Avenue Q) as the sole actor.
"[John Tartaglia] has the perfect combination of comic timing and an innate likability that works so well for this character," says artistic director David Saint.
The creative team includes Christopher J. Bailey (light design), Andrew Boyce (set design), and Alex Koch (projection design).
Performances run through March 29.
