After months of saying she had no plans to see the Broadway musical about her life — even going so far as to skip the festivities on opening night— Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Carole King finally attended Beautiful — The Carole King Musical at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on Thursday, April 3.

Following the show, King, who was watching from the audience, surprised much of the cast by joining them onstage to help gather funds during the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS spring collection period. King raised $30,000 for the organization by performing "You've Got a Friend."

"It was an honor to see Beautiful for the first time last night," King said in a statement. "Jessie Mueller and company are fantastic, and it was so joyous to be there. I couldn't be more proud."

Mueller stars as King in the musical, which features a book by Douglas McGrath, direction by Marc Bruni, and a score culled from the hits of King and her collaborators, Gerry Goffin, Barry Mann, and Cynthia Weil. The principal company also includes Jake Epstein as Goffin, Anika Larson as Weil, and Jarrod Spector as Mann.
