Celebrate Wicked's 15th Anniversary by Looking Back on Opening Night

The Broadway production of Wicked turns 15 today, October 30. To celebrate, we're looking back at the show's opening-night party in 2003, where cast members including Idina Menzel, Kristin Chenoweth, Joel Grey, and Norbert Leo Butz posed for photos at Tavern on the Green.

Based on the novel of the same name by Gregory Maguire, Wicked is set in the land of Oz and tells the story of young women Glinda and Elphaba, who grow up to become Glinda the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West, respectively. Featuring music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman, the production is directed by Joe Mantello, with musical staging by Wayne Cilento.

The original company of Wicked was led by Chenoweth as Glinda, Menzel as Elphaba, Butz as Fiyero, and Grey as the Wizard. The principal cast also include Carole Shelley as Madame Morrible, Christopher Fitzgerald as Boq, and Michelle Federer as Nessarose.

As of October 30, 2018, Wicked has played 6,263 performances on Broadway.
