West Side Story, the iconic American musical featuring a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, tells a modernized Romeo-and-Juliet love story. Set on the Upper West Side of New York City, Tony and Maria are the "star-crossed" lovers, torn apart by their allegiances to competing teenage street gangs, the American "Jets" and the Puerto Rican "Sharks."
