Lauper is the Tony-winning songwriter behind the Tony-winning musical.
Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and the cast of Broadway's Kinky Boots joined together to celebrate the fundraising work of Tony-winning songwriter Cyndi Lauper and her True Colors Fund, presenting the singer and organization with a check for $150,000. Since opening in April 2013, Kinky Boots has raised more than $1.2 million for Broadway Cares.
The True Colors Fund works to end homelessness among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth, creating a world in which young people can be their true selves. Featuring a Tony-winning score by Lauper and a book by Harvey Fierstein, Kinky Boots tells the story of Charlie Price, the owner of a failing shoe factory, who realizes that a sassy drag queen named Lola has the key to the business' success. The current cast is led by Andy Kelso and Tony winner Billy Porter at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.
