The Drama League celebrated the 2012-2013 Broadway and off-Broadway season with their 79th annual Drama League Awards luncheon, held Friday, May 17 at the Marriott Marquis Times Square.
Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike star David Hyde Pierce and
Smash cast member Debra Messing served as hosts.
During the ceremony, awards were presented to Kinky Boots in the category of Outstanding Production of a Broadway or off-Broadway Musical, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike in the category of Outstanding Production of a Broadway or off-Broadway Play, Pippin in the category of Outstanding Revival of a Broadway or off-Broadway Musical, and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? in the category of Outstanding Revival of a Broadway or off-Broadway Play. Nathan Lane received the Distinguished Performance Award for his work in The Nance.
First presented in 1922, the Drama League Awards are the only major theater awards in the U.S. chosen by audience members, specifically the nationwide membership of the Drama League who attend Broadway and off-Broadway productions. Past honorees for the coveted Distinguished Performance Award include Audra McDonald, Liam Neeson, Hugh Jackman, Bernadette Peters, Patti LuPone, James Earl Jones, Julie Harris, Katharine Cornell, and Christopher Plummer.
