The event will honor Tony winner and theater icon Cicely Tyson.
The American Theatre Wing has announced that Tony Award winners Cynthia Erivo (The Color Purple) and Adriane Lenox (After Midnight), as well as Tony Award nominees Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple) and Saycon Sengbloh (Eclipsed) will perform in its annual gala on September 26 at the Plaza Hotel. As previously announced, the gala will honor legendary Tony Award-winning actress Cicely Tyson.
The event will also include performances by the Cicely Tyson Celebration Choir, a group formed for this event. The funds raised at the gala will provide vital support for the Wing’s programs, which champion and celebrate American Theatre.
"I am thrilled by the talent for this year’s gala, and am proud to have such an extraordinary group pay tribute to this trailblazing actress," said Heather Hitchens, president and CEO of the Wing, in a statement.
Honorary cochairs for the event include Kathy Bates, LaTanya Richardson Jackson and Samuel L. Jackson, Spike Lee and Tonya Lewis Lee, Pauletta and Denzel Washington, and Alfre Woodard and Roderick Spencer. Marva A. Smalls, CeCe Black, and Anki Leeds will serve as Gala Chairs.
Tyson won a Tony Award for her performance in The Trip to Bountiful and starred last season in The Gin Game. Her Broadway credits also include The Corn Is Green, Trumpets of the Lord, and Tiger, Tiger Burning Bright. Her many film credits include Sounder, for which she received an Oscar nomination, as well as Fried Green Tomatoes, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, and The Help.
