James Earl Jones will no longer be performing in the Roundabout Theatre Company benefit reading.
Roundabout Theatre Company has announced that six-time Tony nominee Danny Burstein (Fiddler on the Roof) and Tony Award winner Victoria Clark (Gigi) have joined the benefit concert reading of Damn Yankees, to take place at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on Monday, December 11, at 7:30pm.
Burstein and Clark will play Van Buren and Meg Boyd, respectively, joining Whoopi Goldberg (Applegate) and Maggie Gyllenhaal (Lola) in the cast. James Earl Jones, who was previously announced to play Mr. Welch, will no longer be able to perform on December 11 due to a scheduling conflict. New casting will be announced soon.
Tony winner Kathleen Marshall directs the one-night-only presentation of the 1955 musical, featuring a score by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross, and a book by George Abbott and Douglass Wallop. The show is described as follows: "Would you do ANYTHING to help your favorite baseball team win the pennant? In the Faustian baseball musical, Damn Yankees, Joe Boyd sells his soul to the devil to be the home run hitter that will guide his favorite team, the Washington Senators, to a win against those 'Damn Yankees.'"
Proceeds from the benefit concert reading will support Roundabout Theatre Company’s many programs and initiatives, including Education at Roundabout.
