La Jolla Playhouse‘s final production of the 2012/2013 season will be Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, a world-premiere musical written and directed by Playhouse Director Emeritus Des McAnuff with music and lyrics by The Flaming Lips. The show will run in November/December 2012 (dates TBA) in the Mandell Weiss Theatre.
The work centers on Yoshimi, a young Japanese artist who journeys alone into a fantastical robot-world where she wages a war with fate. Inspired by the whimsical and psychedelic music of Wayne Coyne and The Flaming Lips, this world premiere musical integrates music from several albums (“Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots,” “The Soft Bulletin,” “At War with the Mystics”) with a story about the triumph of love and optimism over the mystery of our own mortality.
McAnuff is currently helming the Broadway revival of Jesus Christ Superstar, which opens on Broadway at the Neil Simon Theatre later this month, and is the director of the long-running hit Jersey Boys, which continues at Broadway’s August Wilson Theatre, as well as on tour. As previously reported, he will end his tenure as artistic director of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival at the end of the 2012 season.
