The musical made its debut on December 20, 1981.
On December 20, 1981, Henry Krieger, Tom Eyen, and Michael Bennett's musical Dreamgirls opened on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre. On December 19, 2016, longtime members of the Dreamgirls family reunited for a special photo op in honor of the show's 35th anniversary. The event took place at 890 Broadway, a building that served as Bennett's home base and is now Gibney Dance Center.
Among those on hand for the event were Broadway vets Adriane Lenox, LaChanze, Kecia Lewis, Charles Randolph-Wright, and many others who had taken part in various productions of the show through the years.
The musical was nominated for 13 Tony Awards and won six. It was made into a movie starring Jennifer Hudson, Beyoncé, and Jamie Foxx in 2006. Dreamgirls follows girl group The Dreamettes on their rise to success in the music world. The show is currently making its debut on London's West End.
