Driving Miss Daisy Begins Performances at Mile Square Theatre

Count Stovall and Barbara Broughton star under Mark Cirnigliaro’s direction.

Driving Miss Daisy begins performances tonight at Mile Square Theatre ahead of an opening night set for February 2.

Alfred Uhry's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama is set in the South between the late '40s and early '70s, the play explores an unlikely friendship between an elderly white Southern Jewish woman, Daisy Werthan, and her African-American chauffer, Hoke Colburn. Mark Cirnigliaro directs.

"When looking for a play to open the 2018 season, I was searching for a work that dealt with the tension between race and class and decided to re-read Alfred Uhry’s well known play Driving Miss Daisy," said artistic director Chris O’Connor. "I was moved by its heart and its strength as a work of drama. And it's still very relevant in a time in the world when tolerance and acceptance are under assault by a rising tide of bigotry."

Featured in the cast are Barbara Broughton (Sunday in the Park With George), Count Stovall (A Streetcar Named Desire), and Matthew Lawler (The Family). The creative team includes Matthew J. Fick (scenic designer), Peter Fogel (costume designer), and Justin Partier (lighting design).

Performances continue through February 25.
