Dylan McDermott to Star in New Stage Adaptation of Tennessee Williams' Baby Doll

Emmy nominee Dylan McDermott (The Practice) will return to the stage in a new adaptation of Tennessee Williams' Baby Doll, set to play New Jersey's McCarter Theatre Center from September 11-October 11.

Directed by McCarter artistic leader Emily Mann, the production is inspired by Williams' 1956 film of the same title, which blends elements of two of his one-acts, 27 Wagons Full of Cotton and The Long Stay Cut Short. Mann adapts the work for the stage with French playwright Pierre Laville.

Baby Doll is described as follows: "Times are tough in the Mississippi Delta, where cotton is king and the summer heat drives desires of every kind. Baby Doll is about to celebrate her 20th birthday, and in doing so must finally consummate her marriage to Archie Lee, a much older man whose worldview is as rotten and decrepit as the crumbling house in which they live with Aunt Rose Comfort. A suspicious fire at a rival (and more successful) cotton gin brings Silva Vacarro to call, and his visit ignites an explosive game of cat-and-mouse where what happens next is anyone’s guess."

McDermott will take on the role of cotton gin magnate Silvia Vacarro, originated on-screen by Eli Wallach. He is joined by Patricia Conolly (Aunt Rose Comfort), Susannah Hoffman (Baby Doll), Robert Joy (Archie Lee), and Brian McCann (Sheriff). The creative team is made up of Edward Pierce (scenic and lighting design), Susan Hilferty (costume design), Darron L. West (sound design), Samantha Bellomo (fight choreographer), and Thom Jones (dialect coach).
