Maria Friedman’s production comes to the Huntington Theatre Company following a successful West End run.
The Huntington Theatre Company has announced casting for its fall mounting of Maria Friedman's Olivier Award-winning production of Merrily We Roll Along. Transferring from the West End, where it ran at the Menier Chocolate Factory in London in 2012, Merrily We Roll Along will run from September 8-October 15 at the Avenue of the Arts/Huntington Avenue Theatre.
Mark Umbers and Damian Humbley will reprise their roles from Friedman’s London production, playing Frank and Charley, respectively. Eden Espinosa (Wicked) joins the cast as Mary.
The cast will also feature Aimee Doherty (A Little Night Music) as Gussie, Christopher Chew (The Bridges of Madison County) as Joe Josephson, Jennifer Ellis (The Bridges of Madison County) as Beth Spencer, Amy Barker (A Little Night Music) as Mrs. Spencer, Robert Saoud (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) as Mr. Spencer, Ceit Zweil (Mame) as Evelyn, and Cameron Levesque and Brendan Cole O’Brien alternating as Frank Jr.
Other cast members include Jessica Kundla as Meg, Maurice Emmanuel Parent as Bunker, Rebecca Gibel as KT, Pablo Torres as Ru, Patrick Varner as Tyler, Craig Walezkao as Jerome, and Morgan Kirner as the newscaster. Caleb Damschroder, Bransen Gates, and Carla Martinez round out the ensemble.
With a score by Stephen Sondheim and a book by George Furth, Merrily We Roll Along travels backwards in time over 30 years and charts the relationships of close friends Franklin, Charley, and Mary. The musical debuted on Broadway in 1981 and ran for only 16 post-opening performances. The production is the subject of the new documentary film Best Worst Thing That Ever Could Have Happened.
The creative team for Merrily We Roll Along features scenic and costume design by Soutra Gilmour, and lighting design by Philip Rosenberg. The production stage manager is Emily F. McMullen and stage manager is Kevin Schlagle. Music direction will be provided by Matthew Stern and choreography by Tim Jackson. The production will feature a live orchestra of nine musicians with orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick.
