The new musical features a book by Sybille Pearson.
Composer Michael John LaChiusa and book writer Sybille Pearson, the team behind the musical adaptation of Giant, are joining forces again for the world premiere of Rain at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego. Based on the short story by Somerset Maugham, the musical, which opens April 1 and runs through May 1, has released its production photos.
Directed by Barry Edelstein, the cast is led by Broadway's Eden Espinosa (Wicked) as Sadie Thompson, a role played in screen adaptations by the likes of Gloria Swanson, Rita Hayworth, and Joan Crawford. The story follows a group of people stranded in a hotel on Western Samoa in 1924, who are scandalized with the arrival of Sadie, a prostitute. When a missionary sets out to reform her, his secrets are slowly revealed.
Joining Espinosa in the company are Marie-France Arcilla, Tony nominee Elizabeth A. Davis (Once), Jeremy Davis, Betsy Morgan (First Daughter Suite), Rusty Ross, Mike Sears, Tally Sessions (School of Rock), and Jared Zirilli (Lysistrata Jones).
