
Singer Fantasia Barrino will take over the role of Celie in the hit musical The Color Purple on April 10.
Fantasia, as she is known, first came to fame when she was declared the winner of season 3 of the TV series American Idol. Since then, she has released the hit album Fantasia, written her autobigoraphy Life Is Not a Fairy Tale and starred in the television film adaptation of the book. She has been nominated for numerous awards, including the Grammy, American Music Award, and the NAACP Image Award. She will appear on The Oprah Winfrey Show on February 28.
The Color Purple stars Kenita R. Miller, Alton Fitzgerald White, Elisabeth Winters-Mendes, NaTasha Yvette Williams, Chaz Lamar Shepherd, Darlesia Cearcy, and Krisha Marcano. The show was nominated for 11 Tony Awards, with LaChanze winning the trophy for Best Actress in a Musical. Its national tour kicks off at Chicago’s Cadillac Palace Theatre on April 17.
