Performances of Fiddlehead Theatre Company's production of West Side Story are in full swing at Strand Theatre Boston tonight.
Based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the musical follows two young lovers caught in the middle of a gang war. Tony, a member of the "American" Jets, falls in love with Maria, the younger sister of Bernardo, a member of the Puerto Rican Sharks. As Tony and Maria’s relationship develops, violence between the two gangs heightens, and the two struggle to hold on to their love while hatred, prejudice, and skewed senses of loyalty close in on them.
The musical features the classic music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and book by Arthur Laurents. Directed by Stacey Stephens, the production features Jeffrey Zicker as Tony, Theo Lencicki as Riff, Gabriel Corey as Action, Waldemar Quinones-Villanueva as Bernardo, Kim Corbett as Maria, Pamela Turpen as Anita, and Carl-Michael Ogle as Chino.
The creative team includes Charles Peltz (musical director), Wendy Hall (choreographer), Mac Young (scenic design), Stacey Stephens (costume design), Margaret Galvin (assistant costume design and wardrobe supervisor), Daniel H. Jentzen (lighting design), and Maya Landi (hair and makeup and blood design).
Performances continue through October 25.
